want to live longer? stretch.
It’s official, science says longevity is linked to stretching. A study published in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health found that middle-aged adults with better flexibility lived longer than those with a lower flexibility score.
After analysing data on 3,139 people (34% women and 66% men) aged 46–65 years, they were all given a body flexibility score. This score was derived from a combination of the passive range of motion in 20 movements (each scored 0–4) involving 7 different joints, resulting in a score range of 0–80.
Interestingly flexibility was 35% higher in women compared with men. During an average follow-up of 12.9 years, 302 individuals (9.6%) comprising 224 men and 78 women died. Flexibility levels exhibited an inverse relationship with mortality risk and was nearly 10% higher for survivors compared with non-survivors in both men and women.
After taking age, body mass index, and health status into account, men and women with a low flexibility score had a 1.87- and 4.78-times higher risk of dying, respectively, than those with a high score.
How PNF Stretching Supports Longevity
At Stretch Life, we specialise in PNF stretching, a scientifically-backed form of assisted stretching that goes beyond flexibility. PNF involves a combination of muscle stretching and contracting, which improves range of motion and helps strengthen the muscles around joints.
Joint Health and Mobility
Flexibility is deeply connected to joint health. PNF stretching supports the range of motion and strength in the joints, reducing wear and tear on cartilage and connective tissues. With regular PNF stretching, you can protect against joint degeneration and reduce the risk of conditions like arthritis, which commonly affects older adults. Even if arthritis has already set-in, PNF stretching reduces inflammation that can trigger arthritis flare-ups.
Improved Neuromuscular Connection
PNF stretching is a powerful way to build the mind-body connection. By focusing on muscle control and engaging the nervous system, PNF helps train the body to respond better to balance challenges. This kind of coordination becomes especially important in preventing falls as we get older, a key factor in sustaining quality of life and independence.
Stretching as Preventative Health Care
Think of stretching as a crucial part of preventative health care, similar to brushing your teeth. Just as brushing prevents cavities, regular stretching supports the long-term health of muscles, tendons, and joints. This can make everyday movements easier, lower the likelihood of injury, and reduce pain and stiffness.
At Stretch Life, we know that building a stretching routine into a busy lifestyle can be challenging, which is where we step in. Our PNF-assisted stretching sessions are led by highly trained stretch therapists who tailor each session to suit your individual needs. You don’t need to carve out extra time for stretching or worry about your technique—our team will guide you through every movement safely and effectively.
